With all the recent furor over the (: “We have met the enemy, and he is Sony/BMG.”), one of the prevailing pieces of advice (and, certainly, I’ve used it), is “Use a Mac.” While the Mac is extremely less vulnerable to viruses and spyware and the like, remember that this Sony nastiness is installed with your permission by agreeing to an EULA. Not that you told Sony to give every (cr|h)acker a trivial way to enter your system, but it is wrapped in an EULA.
Anyway, back on topic: Macintouch is that the Mac is not invulnerable to Sony’s DRM. Apparently some kernel extensions from gets installed if you agree to the EULA on a Macintosh. Once again, it’s wrapped in an EULA that says it’ll be installing software. The Mac version is not a rootkit, or at least, it doesn’t appear to be, but kernel extensions can be nasty pieces of software; it’s quite possible that agreeing to this EULA will 0wn your Mac as well as the Windows boxes.
One of these days, consumers will rise up and refuse to be treated as criminals. I applaud Sony/BMG for hastening that day.
