Loosely defined as software that has its underlying source code available. Seems to at attract cool developers and zealots alike. Most (but certainly not all) of the major innovations in software today are coming from open source software, as programmers world-wide can look at the code and enhance it. Open source software is generally believed to be more secure for the same reason.
