Contrary to popular belief, DRAM does not immediately lose its contents after power is removed, but rather that its contents fade off over several seconds. Extreme cold can prolong this effect, to a dozen minutes or so with liquid nitrogen.
Disk encryption relies on keeping the encryption keys in RAM. It is possible to combine this fact with “cold RAM” and foil disk encryption by scanning the contents of DRAM even after power is removed.
