Turn Veterans’ Day into the day elections are held. Currently, elections are held about two weeks earlier than Veterans’ Day. This is, imo, an excellent idea. Not only do we give most businesses the day off, so citizens can more easily vote, it reinforces the idea that these Veterans were lost for just this reason. Veterans’ Day is, in most peoples’ minds, relegated to ‘minor holiday’ status. This would help to curb that, opening up all sorts of areas to rememberances and voting parties, which cannot be a bad thing.
