UPnP

Universal Plug and Play. Similar to Apple’s Bonjour, a service for finding and using shares on a LAN. In the case of UPnP, it seems largely geared towards media streaming.

I’m personally interested in it as a bridge between my home media server and my N810.

UPnP Servers for Mac OS X

  • uShare is in the MacPorts repository
  • OSXBMC is a port of the Xbox Media Center for Mac OS X Leopard
  • MediaLink is a Mac OS X PrefPane for setting up UPnP services ($20)

UPnP Clients for Mac OS X

  • OSXBMC is a port of the Xbox Media Center for Mac OS X Leopard
  • Plex is the fork of XBMC project that I use on our Mac mini at home as a media center

Question for the class

Do you think if Barack Obama had left his seriously ill wife after having had multiple affairs, had been a member of the “Keating Five,” had had a relationship with a much younger lobbyist that his staff felt the need to try and block, had intervened on behalf of the client of said young lobbyist with a federal agency, had denounced then embraced Jerry Falwell, had denounced then embraced the Bush tax cuts, had confused Shiite with Sunni, had confused Al Qaeda in Iraq with the Mahdi Army, had actively sought the endorsement and appeared on stage with a man who denounced the Catholic Church as a whore, and stated that he knew next to nothing about economics — do you think it’s possible that Obama would have been treated differently by the media than John McCain has been? Possible?

Apple TV

The Apple TV (or, more correctly, the ?tv) is a set-top box designed to play back media from an iTunes library. The original model shipped in March 2007.

Among its features (besides the normal stunning design from Apple) is its internal 40GB hard drive, 802.11n wifi networking, and the Front Row-ish interface with the dead simple Apple remote.

The ?tv does not have any recording capabilities, and lacks a tuner, so its function is limited to playback only. Basically, it’s a large, stationary video iPod that uses your television for its display and speakers. it can be synced over ethernet, either wired or wifi.

In addition to playback of synced content, computers running on the local network can stream media to the device.

Take Two

  • At Macworld 2008, Apple introduced movie rentals from the iTunes store, including from the Apple TV, and a brand new interface for the unit. Dubbed the “Apple TV Take Two” by the media (Apple itself doesn’t distinguish between versions), the hardware is largely unchanged. A software update was pushed out for older units.

The Sad State of Corporate News

I do not regularly watch any corporate network news, though occasionally I’ll turn on Keith Olberman’s show. Still, an article over at Presentation Zen got me thinking.  read more »
