Google’s mail application. First webapp to really showcase what could be done with AJAX. It is in perpetual beta, and you can sign up by invitation only. I’ve got lots of invitations; if anyone wants one, just let me know.
Gmail has a couple of interesting features, particularly for a web-based mail app:
- “Archive” instead of deleting mail. As the mailbox space you’re given begins at 2GB and is continually expanding, you never need to throw any mail away (you can, though).
- Labels instead of folders. Search by label. Google, search, yeah, works well. Mail can have multiple labels. You can assign labels manually or create filters to do that.
- Conversations instead of sorting by date. Conversations are like threads, but apparently not quite as sophisticated, because GMail chokes on threading that mutt handles fine.
