GNU

GNU is a recursive acronym, standing for “GNU’s Not Unix.” GNU software is free (I would say open source there, but RMS may have my hide) versions of the closed software tools distributed with Unix.

Because of the schism between proponents of the term “free software” and those of “open source software,” a growing trend is to refer to both, equally as FOSS, or “Free and Open Source Software.”

Most software running on a machine that is using the Linux operating system is GNU software. Because of this fact, The Free Software Foundation asks that we call the environment “GNU/Linux.”

GNU is also closely related to the GPL, the free software license under which most open source software is distributed.
