Mighty Mouse

Apple Mighty Mouse

On Tuesday, 2 August 2005, Apple introduced its first multibutton mouse, called the “Mighty Mouse.” Since the beginning, Apple’s mice have had no more than one button (the revision to the mouse, starting with the iMac, was to have zero buttons; the whole of the front of the mouse was clickable.) Apple’s usability testing showed that more than one button was confusing to users. While Mac OS X, beginning all the way back with Mac OS 8.6, has always been able to support multiple buttons (my 5-button Microsoft Trackball works out-of-the-box), Apple only made one or zero button mice for their machines.

It is not yet clear if this mouse will replace the standard mouse in Apple Macintosh configurations.

Update: It is now clear. The Apple zero-button mouse is no more.

First, the Intel switch, and now this? What’s going on in Cupertino?
